Nobody truly knows who J.P. Cormier is — and that’s part of the magic.
A child prodigy, he picked up the guitar at five and learned faster than anyone could teach him. By his teens, he was already touring the American South as an in-demand multi-instrumentalist, becoming indispensable to every band he played with.
In the early ’90s, J.P. returned to Canada as a sideman for Stompin’ Tom Connors and a key contributor at Halifax’s Studio H, handling everything from performance to production — all before turning 20.
By the mid-’90s, he emerged as a powerhouse on the East Coast, astonishing Cape Breton audiences with fiddle work that sounded generations deep, despite being Ontario-born. His musical story also ran through Nashville, where he played the Opry and worked alongside legends like Waylon Jennings.
Then came Another Morning (1997), the breakout album that introduced him as a formidable songwriter and singer. Its songs became part of the East Coast musical landscape and influenced artists like Dave Gunning, Matt Andersen, David Myles, and Joel Plaskett. The album earned a Juno nomination and an ECMA — the first of many.
Since then, J.P. has released 16 more albums, collected multiple ECMA and Music Nova Scotia Awards, another Juno nod, and a Canadian Folk Music Award. His discography spans fiddle, mandolin, banjo, guitar, instrumental tributes, and acclaimed songwriting collections — a testament to his staggering range.
Onstage, he needs nothing but himself and his instruments. Audiences walk away amazed, wondering whether they just witnessed a world-class guitarist, a master storyteller, a genre-bender, or something entirely singular.
Accolades from icons like Chet Atkins, Marty Stuart, Waylon Jennings, and Gordon Lightfoot point one way — but J.P. simply calls himself a performer. Witty, humble, sharp, and deeply human, he speaks through music for the people who often go unheard.
Above all, he is an entertainer. One of the best.
