Econoline Crush, the Canadian rock band fronted by Trevor Hurst, is releasing their first album in over a decade, When The Devil Drives, along with a documentary film titled Flatlander. The album, produced by Ian Alexander Smith and mixed by Jack Joseph Puig, features two songs co-written with David “Ziggy” Sigmund, a former guitarist who passed away in March 2022. These songs, “Invincible” and “Smashing Optimistic,” are the first two singles. The album title itself is a tribute to Ziggy and is inspired by a Shakespeare quote he frequently used.
The file also details Trevor Hurst’s personal struggles with addiction and mental health, including depression and a recent diagnosis of ADHD and ADD. These experiences are reflected in songs like “No Quitter” and “Going Under.” Hurst’s journey led him to pursue a second career as a psychiatric nurse, working at Canupawakpa Dakota First Nation, an experience documented in Flatlander. During this time, he reconnected with music, writing “Whisper” for the album, a song about communicating with his children from the “other side.” His time at Canupawakpa also solidified his faith in a creator.
Econoline Crush formed in 1992, signing with EMI Music Canada in 1994, and achieved breakthrough success with their platinum-selling album The Devil You Know in 1997. After a hiatus, the band returned in 2008 with Ignite and an EP in 2011.
